Guide to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

John F. Kennedy International Airport truly is
a massive airport handling 30 million passengers every year and
is New Yorks main airport. It is located 15 miles southeast of Manhattan.
Terminals
and check-In
There are nine terminals in all, with four colour-coded sections.
The green quadrant contains Terminals 1, 2 and 3; the blue quadrant
Terminals 4E and 4W; the orange quadrant Terminals 5, 6 and 7 and
the red quadrant Terminals 8 and 9. All nine terminals provide flights
to international destinations. The terminals are all linked by a
shuttle service. The shuttle service is also colour coded, each
colour representing a different route. The shuttle service also
conveniently stops off at car rental sites.
Airport
facilities
There is a staggering array of restaurants, cafés and bars
to choose from. It is easy to get lost in an airport of this size
but useful maps of are provided.
Business
and meetings
Internet connection points are found throughout the airport. Conference
facilities are provided in Terminal 7 and also in some of the airport
lounges. Faxing, photocopying and computer services are all available
at various locations throughout the terminals.
Shopping
and money
There are banks in three of the nine terminals. ATM machines and
bureaux de change are provided in all but the Terminal 6. There
is an extensive range of duty free goods available, including alcohol,
cigarettes, convenience items, souvenirs, electorinic goods and
designer brands.
Disability
assistance
The airport meets the highest standards for accomodationg those
with mobility difficulties. Help is never far away and the airport
is easily accessible by ramp. TDD phones are also on hand, just
follow the many signposts.
Information
There are a number of customer service desks throughout the airport
and there is an automated information system that provides all the
relevant information that arrivals, departures and transit travellers
might need. The Ground Transportation Information desk is near the
baggage claim area. It is worth enquiring about the most convenient
way out of the airport and into the city as departure can be quite
hectic.

By taxi
Taxis can be found outside the main arrivals halls however there
is often a shortage due to excessive demand. Limousines are also
available on request.
By bus
The airport puts on a special bus service to many destinations throughout
the city. It is reliable and relatively inexpensive. Destinations
include Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal and the Port Authority
Bus Terminal.
Parking
The airport has the normal parking arrangements, although parking
can be difficult and is often overcrowded. Long-term parking is
located quite a way from the airport (4 miles) but shuttles are
regular. Two Expressways, (the Van Wyck and the JFK) lead into the
Central Terminal Area of the airport. Along these expressways you
will find colour-coded signs providing information for appropriate
parking areas near the terminal.
