Guide to Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD)
This airport is a major embarkation point to
Latin American destinations. It is situated just nine miles from
the city and with 25 million passengers a year it is becoming one
of Europe’s most important airports. Expansion of the airport
is planned in order to handle much of the increasing traffic air
traffic congestion.
Terminals
and check-In
It has three terminal buildings which are connected by moving walkways.
Terminal 1 provides international flights. Terminal 2 handles domestic
flights and other short haul destinations. Terminal 3 is specifically
for Iberia domestic and regional shuttle services.
Airport
facilities
There are the standard array of newagents, bookshops and souvenir
shops available. Most of the airport’s food and beverage outlets
tends to be located in Terminal 1, after passport control. There
is also a medical centre and a nursery. In the terminal there are
no locker and storage facilities. There is also a post office in
Terminal 1.
Business
and meetings
There is a business and conference centre located in Terminal 2.
Some airlines also provide business lounges and there are also six
VIP lounges within the airport building.
Disability
assistance
Wheelchair access is above average and there is sufficient disabled
parking.

Madrid Barajas Airport Transportation
By taxi
The airport has unofficial taxis touting for business inside the
terminal and the airport authorities warn travellers about such
practices. Official taxis can be found outside the Arrivals halls
in each terminal. A journey should take no more than 30 minutes
into central Madrid.
By car
The airport is eight miles from Madrid. Directions are well sign
posted. Head for the M-30 via the A-2 or the N-11.
By rail
The airport is linked to Madrid by the underground system. There
is no direct airport link to the main rail network. Travellers that
need to use overland rail services should use the underground system
first. The station for the Madrid Metro is located in Terminal 2.
By bus
The airport has a bus service that runs into central Madrid (route
89) which leaves every 15 minutes.
Parking
There are two main car parks offering both short and long term parking.
