Guide to Honolulu International Airport (HNL)
Like the islands surrounding it, Honolulu International
Airport has a charm all of its own. It is just a short drive from
the city centre but with its beautiful features it could be mistaken
for being a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It
features include decorative waterfalls, indoor gardens and fishponds.
Terminal
and check-In
HNL has three terminals: International, Inter-island and Commuter.
The Wiki Wiki free shuttle connects the terminals. The main terminal
is called the John Rodgers Terminal. It has three concourses, the
Diamond, Central and Ewa. Open air walkways circle the terminal
providing a pleasant walk.
Airport
facilities
There is most definitely a pacific feel to the various bars and
restaurants. There are the usual airports stores including two bookstores
and a number of newsagents. There is also a toy store, and opportunity
to shop for clothes, jewellery, and souvenirs. The terminal also
provides a round-the-clock medical centre.
Business
and meetings
There is a high standard of business services available in the main
terminal, including an office supplies store and PC rental. There
is a further business centre near to gate 25 and
there are extensive conferencing facilities in the International
section of the airport. Conferencing services must however be pre
arranged (contact the Airport Information Unit: +1 808 836 6459).
Shopping
and money
The Bank of Hawaii has a branch open from 08:30 to 16:00, Mon-Thurs,
and open until 18:00 on Friday. ATMs and bureaux de change are also
well represented. Duty free shopping is available and the airport
also provides coin-operated lockers for weary travellers to store
hand luggage.
Disability
assistance
The airport meets international standards. It is easily accessible
by wheelchair and TDD telephones are also available.

lobby area.

Honolulu International Airport Transportation
By taxi
Taxis are readily available and it only takes 25 minutes into downtown
Waikiki. Taxi drivers have been known to overcharge unknowing tourists
so it is advisable to seek a taxi with a meter. The fare should
be around $20.
By car
When approaching from the town centre, drive along Kalakaua Avenue
and turn left just before the zoo. Follow this road which leads
to the H-1 freeway. Head west until signs for the airport are visible.
Coming from the airport, take the ramp leading to the H-1 freeway
eastbound and follow signs for the Nimitz highway. Which in turns
leads to the harbour and downtown near Waikiki.
By bus
The city bus routes 19 and 20 go to Waikiki and to various other
downtown locations from airport exits. The airport operates a shuttle
to any hotel in the town. The shuttle can be caught outside the
terminal and is a twice hourly services.
Parking
The airport has ample provision for both short term and long-term
parking. It also has a valet service. Disabled parking areas are
also available. Shuttle buses run from parking areas not quite so
close to the main airport building.
