Guide to Cairo International Airport (CAI)

The major gateway to Egypt is Cairo International
Airport, located in Heliopolis, 22 km northeast of the city centre.
Despite the large number of tourists that visit Egypt annually,
the airport lacks modern amenities and conveniences.
Terminals
and check-in
There are two terminals in the airport, connected by a courtesy
shuttle bus. The bus runs around the clock, leaving the terminals
every 30 minutes. Terminal 1 is known as the Old Airport, while
Terminal 2 is called the New Airport.
Airport
facilities
A basic restaurant is available in the airport and there are bars
in the Departures Hall of both terminals. However, there are inadequate
facilities in the public areas (pre security), and passengers are
not permitted to check in more than an hour early, so passengers
are advised not to arrive too early.
A post office and pharmacy are located
in the Departures Hall at both terminals. Porters and baggage trolleys
are available, as are left luggage facilities, located in both terminals.
Business
and meetings
A business centre is located in Terminal 1, linked by an escalator
to the new Transit Hall. Business facilities and conference facilities
are also provided by the Novotel Cairo Airport Hotel nearby (Tel:
(0) 2 918 520).
Shopping
and money
Gift shops, clothes shops, bookshops and newsagents are available
in the Departures Hall of both terminals and in the new Transit
Hall. There are duty-free shops in the Arrivals and Departures Halls
of both terminals.
A bank, ATM and 24-hour bureau de
change are located inside the Departures Hall at both terminals.
Disability
assistance
Passengers with special needs should contact their airline for assistance,
while wheelchairs are available on request. Toilets with access
for the disabled are available, but there are no designated parking
spaces for disabled drivers.
Information
Information counters are located in both Terminal 1 and Terminal
2, in both Arrivals and Departures halls and also in the new Transit
Hall.

Cairo International Airport transportation
By taxi
Black and white taxis are available outside the Arrivals Hall. This
is the most popular option and not too costly, but make sure you
agree on a price before the journey. There are also limousines serving
central Cairo, departing from in front of the Arrivals Hall.
By car
If driving from Cairo city centre, cross the 6th October Bridge,
via Salah Salem Road which will lead to Heliopolis. Signage from
the city centre to the airport and Heliopolis is good.
By bus
Buses run from the airport to central Cairo. An airport bus service
departs from Terminal 1. Bus no. 400 departs every 30 minutes during
the day and hourly during the night.
Parking
Short-term carparking with a capacity of 1,000 cars is located within
walking distance of the terminal buildings. The Teminal 1 carpark
outside Terminal 1 was renovated in 2002.
