Guide to Bangkok International Airport (BKK)
Transportation to and from the airport

Bangkok International Airport (also known as Don Muang) is located 25 kilometres north of the city and is a busy hub for the Asia/Pacific region. A new airport is scheduled to open in the Southeast of the metropolitan area in 2005. The airport is generally busy, particularly during the peak tourist season (Nov - April) but copes reasonably well with the traffic.

Don Muang has two international terminals and a domestic terminal. The international terminals are built side by side with the domestic terminal nearby, connected by an air-conditioned walkway and a free shuttle bus.

Bangkok's Terminal 1 handles Asian and Eastern European Airlines while Terminal 2 houses mostly Western and Australian airlines. Bangkok's Domestic Passenger Terminal handles domestic flights for Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and others.
The two tiered building handles departures on the upper level and arrivals on the lower.

Don Muang offers a variety of dining options for the traveller, ranging from fast food to traditional Thai cuisine. English bookshops and speciality shopping are on offer, and perfume, cigarettes and alcohol are available from the airport’s two duty free shops. An extensive range of duty free goods are available in the departures hall as well as variety of overpriced up-market Thai cultural souvenirs and gifts.

There are three banks in the airport, one in each terminal, as well as ATM’s and currency exchange bureaux.

There is a business centre in the transit centre of International Passenger Terminal 1. Telecommunications centres are located in International Passenger Terminal 2 and International Terminal 1’s post office.

Information points are located at arrivals and departures in both the international and domestic terminals.

Transportation to and from Bangkok International Airport

Don Muang train station is a short distance away and is accessible via an overhead walkway. It provides train services to and from Bangkok and the north of the country. Services operate between 06:06 am and 20:07 pm daily.

Public bus stops are situated in front of the airport on the main highway in and out of Bangkok. Information desks on site provide the necessary travel information and bus services are frequent and cheap if somewhat unpunctual. Minibuses can also be hired for group travellers and hotel pick-ups.

There are several airport minibuses that run to different sections of central Bangkok. The set down points are posted on the side of each bus and there are stops outside each Terminal.

Taxis are the most convenient means of getting around Bangkok and are relatively inexpensive. Ranks are located outside the Arrival Halls of Terminals 1 and 2, and the Domestic Passenger Terminal. A typical journey into central Bangkok will cost around 200 baht, depending on the traffic. This includes a 50 baht levy for waiting taxis. Passengers opting to travel on the toll ways must pay this fee on top of the taxi charge. Be wary of unlicensed taxi drivers overcharging you for the trip, and always insist on the meter.

To get into Bangkok by car, follow Viphawdee Rangsit Highway and enter the toll-way in the direction of city centre. Drivers should note that the highways into Bangkok can be busy and slow-moving.

Don Muang provides excellent car parking space for both short term and long -term parking and it is fairly inexpensive. There is a seven-storey car park next to International Passenger Terminal 2 and a three-storey car park outside the Domestic Passenger Terminal. Another car park is located in the basement section of International Passenger Terminal 1.
